I have been here 5 months. At tour, I was a little hit on "live in". Now I truly am delighted to be in this community. It's quite an adjustment. They're good to me, intellectually advantaged, and nice for old age!

If You Have to Move Into an Assisted Living Community, This is the Place to Go
I would recommend you come here to live. There are nice accommodations, and the entire community is very nice. There are three meals a day, activities, exercises, movies, housekeeping, and linen changing that is included in the monthly fee. They have a washer and dryer in my unit and a kitchenette in the room. The staff are wonderful to work with if there are questions or concerns. The maintenance team is very quick to assist with requests. We are very happy here.

Be Wary
I would tell others to be wary about what The Reserve is saying they offer to you. We chose them because they were very friendly and welcoming coming in. We were really sold on what they said they would offer as far as care services, that their care would be better than other places. But that has not been true whatsoever. Don't be taken in by the bells and whistles, or what you're being sold. Most of the staff have been okay, but the follow-up is not good. We've had several communication issues that after six weeks were still not resolved. They said they didn't have my phone number on file even though I had provided it from the beginning. So during an emergency, they weren't able to contact us or give us updates. That finally has been resolved, but too little too late. The follow-through on the care is just not there. The number of staff that they have in and out with turnover is incredible. They're constantly having to retrain people, which is frustrating when your loved one needs a higher level of care. It's a great community for somebody who is very independent and doesn't need a lot of care. But if your loved one need more care, it's not a great option.

Review of The Reserve At Thousand Oaks
While "Star" ratings facilitate statistical processing, they cannot hope to characterize the fine-grain differences that discriminate among comparable contenders, and it is in the attention to and execution of resident service details that The Reserve at Thousand Oaks excels in each of the rated dimensions. Core services are impeccably rendered by friendly and helpful staff who are typically responsive above and beyond their assigned duties to residents' often extraordinary requests. The Reserve offers residents a multitude of regularly scheduled on-site activities covering a broad spectrum of interests ranging from intensely physical exercise sessions to mentally challenging games, from manual arts (such as building and painting and jewelry-making) to classical concerts and twice-a-day movies in a comfortable theater, from supporting intellectual participation activities (like a book club) to games of chance (e.g., nickel poker). In addition, off-site trips to events of special interest are offered periodically for selective participation by interested residents. Living quarters are kept meticulously clean by thorough routine once-a-week cleaning and in-between services if/as needed. Requests for maintenance are expeditiously and professionally handled. The one-word descriptor "Great' doesn't begin to adequately characterize the all-round excellence of services rendered to The Reserve's residents.

A Place to Call Home
My wife and I have lived at The Reserve for over 8 years and we are thankful we moved here. In spite of changes in ownership and personnel, the essential services and culture which make this community so attractive have remained unchanged. The Reserve is a friendly and welcoming community, where residents feel that they are part of a family. It is hard to imagine a more caring staff. Even though there have been changes in some staff members over these years, the replacements are as supportive as the ones who left - a tribute to the selection and training by our management. Also impressive is the flexibility that management has shown with regard to resident needs and proposals. My wife and I, as well as many other residents, have been very satisfied with the food and food service at The Reserve, but there are other residents who would not agree with us. I'm sure that differences in opinion and preferences regarding food is typical of retirement communities. Finally, I should mention our lovely campus. The buildings are surrounded by trees, and residents can walk safely away from busy streets.

The location is good. Unfortunately, that is about the only thing that is good about the Reserve. Old property, old outdated units, requires a lot of walking between buildings to get to meals, and no outside activities. For those on a "budget" this might be okay but not for us. Reminds me you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to senior living conditions.

Antiquated place, room size is good. More independent living with option for assistance. The available grass area for dog was the game changer. And the flexibility of the staff. Great vibe, very happy there. Good food.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the California regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about California regulations for Assisted Living.

A Place for Mom has scored The Reserve at Thousand Oaks 9.1 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.
