Give it a year or two before placing your LO here
The room is tiny. The meals were not as promised for almost a month. The activities were non existent for almost a month. There was no way for her to reach staff for several days after moving in. The staff isn't very attentive. The leadership gives good lip service but everyone is new and isn't aligned. The website is contradictory to the contract in several areas. We still haven't been able to get her hair done. There is a lot.

Review for Ivy Park at San Tomas
First, the facility is great. Small, only around 50 residents (not full yet) on 2 floors. Well appointed. Bright colors. Extra wide hallways. Beautiful outdoor patio on the 2nd floor. Residents can go in on own, but exit through the dining/activity area and it is enclosed in glass so residents can be observed. With only 25 or so rooms on each floor, the design is simple, no long walks for residents. Rooms are very nice, Mom has a single. Pretty spacious. Large picture window for natural light & ability to open window (with a latch so not wide enough for someone to try and get out) to let in fresh air. Access to, included in rent, cable TV, if you want a TV. Refrigerator for, in Mom's case, water for visitors, her favorite drinks which the caregivers give her. Bathroom two parts, like an apartment. Spacious closet opposite the vanity. Amenities cabinet next to vanity. Large space for toilet and walk in/roll in shower. The food is excellent. A chef is in charge of meal preparation & very nice. Use fresh ingredients. They accommodate for whatever issues a resident might have. So all that would be a 4.5. The second part is more difficult. When Mom moved in, it was [community removed]. Everyone was very nice but they were struggling. Announced in December they were purchased by Oakmont with transition in January to take over [date removed]. They were very gracious with legacy residents. MS Care levels until resident leaves or passes away. If level of care changes, use MS level. Honored rent agreement as agreed to with MS. Many MS employees left or were asked to leave (surmising here) so we had acting staff in key positions. Good news. Oakmont used Oakmont "roving" managers so at least we were dealing with those that understood Oakmont processes. From February to recently, lost Exec Director, 2 Wellness Directors and 1 Activity Directors which was very difficult and disruptive. We now have what appears to be an Exec Director who is a good manager, responsive, understands issues (per first Townhall) and should be around. Just hired an Activities Director so far seems very good. This was so important in the beginning. My Mom, who we thought wouldn't participate, did! Oakmont activities are quite impressive (as were MS's). They kept the residents engaged. Oakmont appears to try and match activities to residents. Do they like large, small, groups or alone activities? New Wellness Director hasn't started, so can't evaluate. The LVN's, med techs, caregivers are getting better Oakmont has done an excellent job of recruiting good people who seem to be staying. Wasn't the case before. So difficult for residents and families. One important thing....is all the staff from management to caregivers, support staff (maintenance, concierge) are so nice, helpful and very caring. I believe the residents are well cared for. Also, they believe in getting people up and out of their rooms unless ill. This is great. We were worried my Mom wouldn't want to get up or do things. Different people may have different opinions based on what their family member requires. My Mom can communicate. She has stroke related cognitive issues. So confused, but recognizes family, feeds herself, can take all her oral medications & communicate her needs. I am very optimistic for the future. Seems to be order where previously it was somewhat chaotic. Of course much of it due to changing management and lack of caregivers. This seems to be solved.

Need to be Prepared
Today was worst experience yet. I arrived at 8 AM to visit my brother and he was still in his room. Staff was short due to employee illnesses. It was still bad They had maintenance staff helping get some of the patients out of their rooms at 10:30 AM an several of them hadn’t had breakfast yet. They need to be better prepared for these circumstances.

Absolutely not
Their "memory care" center has no actual memory care. They have no actual nurses on staff. It's all what they call med techs. No certification to give medications. The person giving your parents their medication is paid $[fee removed] per hour. They don't know what to look for if there's a problem. CNA's? They call them CM's because they have no training there either.

5 stars for facility & care 4 1/2 for communicaton
Looked at Morningstar 1st of the 5 facilities I toured. Knew immediately MS was the place for our old mom. Needed to do my due diligence to be able to sell MS to my sister who was traveling. Other facilities were too large, overdone, mix of assisted living & memory care. MS is so bright & cheery. Wide hallways. Wonderful colors. 2 floors replicating dining room, activities, patios. Small number of residents, only memory care. Staff are incredibly nice & show great concern & care for residents. She acclimated much faster than we imagined. She told me staff is so nice & always checking on her. Involved in activities.Re communication. At first there was confusion w/procedures, processes, how things are organized. On list of things to bring, a “O” for optional would have helped. Also, very overwhelming decision & easy not to remember things. A simple write up of what to expect would have made for easier transition. With that said we're happy we chose MS.

Wonderful Place for Patients with Dementia
I recently had the opportunity to visit Morning Star San Thomas Memory Care Community, thanks to MJ, who invited me to learn more about the facility. As a Social Worker at SGC rehab, I was truly impressed by the exceptional care and support they provide. One standout feature is their innovative Lavender Program, designed to offer therapeutic activities that promote calmness and well-being for residents with dementia. This program, along with their personalized care, enhances the quality of life for residents. The staff goes above and beyond in offering individualized attention, ensuring both residents and their families feel supported. They take the time to educate families and provide the resources needed for navigating dementia care. Morning Star San Thomas offers a warm, compassionate environment where residents are treated like family. It’s a community that truly prioritizes the well-being of its residents, and I highly recommend it for anyone seeking top-tier memory care

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know California’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about California’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
