Warm and inviting atmosphere
Both the staff and residents seem happy. We get "hello's" as we walk thru the building from both.
Our loved one feels very secure and comfortable.
It is very comforting knowing the staff is looking out for our families best interests.

One thing: my parents are in independent living, so they don't receive any care at the moment. One thing I do like is that even in independent care you can have services (laundry, dressing, showering etc...) if needed. Obviously there is a cost, but it is nice to have that option. One thing that I appreciate is that they go out of their way to get people involved in activities and getting to know others in the facilities. It has been a tremendous facility and the people have been wonderful.

The sales woman at Brookdale didn't talk to the doctors and nurses who then treated mom like a leper and were not told of her condition and care needs. Hostile and judgmental, gossiping about mom almost openly. Tried to charge us [removed]k for services my mom did not receive. It took a long time to get the change off our record.

Our Brookdale Experience
Overall a nice place and staff, but more money needs to be put into updating/maintaining appliances/apartments than decorating or experiences that are nice but unnecessary. General staff are great, admin not always available. Broken laundry machines for months, cleaning crew pressuring residents for good reports/nomination for rewards, AC unit not working properly most of summer, shower not really "walk-in" and poor water pressure. Otherwise good/ very responsive desk staff, good food service staff, and quick, courteous maintenance staff. Very salty, chicken often overcooked, would like more "basic/classic" options (less "fancy" items), "to go" option is nice but often incorrect items sent, Brookdale should have a much more updated, efficient system for tracking meals each month (like a swipe card in real time) - current system takes too long to process and can cause residents to lose track of meals used (setting them up for extra charges) - otherwise content with food and very happy with food service staff. Often cancelled and some cost extra money - transportation staff is great but not always available- everyone should be able to make shopping trips, but some are left off the list (should make multiple trips or hire more staff to accommodate - some residents count on these once/week trips). Again, overall a very nice place and my mom loves living there- that said, we were shocked when she received her first very significant monthly fee/rent increase less than six months into her residency- this is a very expensive community, so increasing the fee/rent annually does not seem appropriate even considering cost of living changes- increases should be based on individual situations (number of years of residence, financial situation, etc.)
Let me reiterate- with all of the horrible places out there for senior care, Brookdale is great. I just wanted to document areas for possible growth. My mom likes it there very much, but I'm just disappointed by some issues that regularly pop up considering the cost. Mom is literally investing everything she has to live there, and she regularly stresses about having enough to stay for the long term. Her financial advisor believes she's created a long term plan, but there's stress about the unknown of future increases. I'd just like to see her be able to actually relax and enjoy her years. She loves it, so that's why she worries.

Our Family's Experience
Biggest "issues" from my perspective:
They don't have an efficient food tracking system, so Mom gets confused about how many of her limited dinners she's used. She tried asking and was told she'd have to wait until they had time to look it up. This sets her up for additional charges which don't even appear for 2-3 months, so I feel like this doesn't set her up for success.
Otherwise, Mom mostly enjoys the meals. She has only been disappointed with quality a few times.
Activities: Every time Mom expresses interest in the shuttle to stores, she's told the list is full and it's not available for two weeks. I'm getting her to stores, but this affects her independence.
She also expressed interest in the walking club, but then is told that it keeps getting canceled.
Mom is reluctant to join things, so it's only making her more reluctant when it doesn't pan out.
All of that said, we're otherwise satisfied! Mom is making friends and enjoying her home. She likes most meals, and the staff always helps her when she asks for it!

Brookdale is a MARY POPPINS place to live, "practically" perfect in every way! That's the truth from our perspective
We did the right thing at the right time and its here. One would hard pressed to find any place else as clean as Brookdale. EVERYONE here is very friendly, kind, caring, helpful FROM the housekeepers, caretakers, all in charge of dining including chefs, maître d's and servers, all maintenance, etc. TO the Executive Director and all who assist her in other executive positions. This would also include most all the other residents here. It takes working together when problems or disagreements occur; all done here amicably. From living in Independent Living, we have absolutely no complaints - that's our story and we're sticking to it! Are you kidding me? I would put Brookdale up against any other Senior Living Residence for food quality, presentation, eclectic selection and satisfaction. We would WIN every time. We can be as busy as we want to be; once in awhile we wish we had more "free" time. Cards, games, puzzles, chair volleyball, billiards, water aerobics, bingo, nightly movies, tailgates during season, kazoo band, choir, church services, flex your brain - just to name a few! You can see what I mean. We'll, you could say we "shopped around." Before making our decision we visited 6 other places; something kept drawing us back to Brookdale 3 times. My husband and I equate our choice like being on a "land cruise" - we have our own stateroom, activities daily, "happy hour" on Friday with "in house" or paid entertainment weekly, fantastic dining every evening with linens (read question 5 for my response), request the private dining room for an extra special occasion (in advance of course), out of town family can rest 1 of 2 or 3 guest rooms for a couple or several nights stay (also in advance) etc. If you have a car you are blessed; if not, you can get a ride.

This facility may be great for some people, but pay attention to the details.
1. My mom was constantly sick and in/out of the hospital while she was there. She has not been sick nor in/out of the hospital since she moved.
2. The cleaning service was lacking.
3. The apartment was filthy when we were moving her in.
4. Maintenance did not fix things properly.
5. The billing was terrible upon move out. They tried to assess a late charge when they were behind on some components of their billing, which is not the fault of the resident.
6. I think it may be a good place for some people & even great for others, but was not a good experience for us.
7. She might have had a better living experience on the assisted living side. However, the other issues would have still existed. I still don't know why she was constantly sick there, but as soon as she moved, she was no longer battling severe illness.
8. The resident garden should be wheelchair accessible.
9. They do a lot of parties and celebrations, which are nice.
10. They have happy hour which people seemed to really enjoy.
11. I hear the food is really good, especially if you don't have a limited diet.

A nice place to feel accepted and cared for.
They have a year around heated pool for water aerobics and then a huge discount over their normal price to move in before the start of the month.. There is problems with billing, and understanding the meal plan.Most people are on different plans so it can be difficult getting accurate answers to questions. Overall, it's good.
