Review for The Palms at O'Neil
Overall, I am pleased with the care & attention my loved-one has received; he is safe which is my first priority. I visit 2-3 times per week & most of the staff knows me by name; I feel this has contributed to him receiving care & attention that is often above & beyond & I would recommend all families do the same. Communication can always be improved, I have occasionally been frustrated by deficiencies here, but the relationships I have forged with staff have helped. Complaints have always been heard & addressed which I have appreciated. Common areas are neat & clean & seasonal decorations add a homey touch, but I do dust & tidy his room myself. The outdoor Pavillion & side yard are well-maintained & an asset for residents who can access it on their own. I desperately wish the variety & quality of food was better; both staff & residents disparage it & I often treat my loved-one to meals out to compensate. As I understand it, activities advertised by the facility's website are pre-covid & therefore outdated (do not rely on the website for any decision-making!!) which is a shame because they sound pretty great! Alas, current activities are limited & not very interesting. I feel a vibrant activities department is essential to a positive ALF experience & I desperately wish such was currently available here. We chose The Palms because we can afford it & certainly there is a correlation between cost & amenities (you get what you pay for) & that is true here. The daily cost of living (minus tv or laundry), is less than the average daily hotel stay these days; that's a decent value when you consider the 24-hour care provided! Bottom line, your loved one will be best served if you are involved in their community; you will need to make an effort with communication. The Palm's provides a safe & caring environment, but important aspects like meals & activities are less appealing.

Great value for the aging.
Older brother has been there since April of this year and he is very positive about his experience there so far. They manage his medications meticulously and that has been very important. The staff is very friendly and available. They really care for their constituents.

I would highly recommend the Palms. It is a wonderful facility with a very caring staff.
Mom and our family have had a very good experience with the Palms. She had a difficult time adjusting to being out of her own home, but a very kind and attentive staff helped her feel comfortable there. Our family is very happy with the care she is receiving there. We chose the Palms after our second visit there. It was very clean, we observed how the staff knew all the residents by name and treated them so kindly. We have gotten to know most of the staff. They are a cheerful and caring group who actually seem like they enjoy their jobs.

Pathetic!
Do not send your loved one to this [removed]! Reading the advertisement they have out there is a complete lie! Bright cheery rooms….LIE! You’re lucky if any of the lighting works. Safety call buttons….JUNK! Most don’t even work! Shower room….DISGUSTING! I’ve found residents soiled disgusting clothes left on the floor. I’ve had to complain many times for I’ve seen not only blood in residents room but also feces that was just left and not cleaned up. They put another residents clothes on my loved one that was clearly too small! Too many times I’ve gone in and my parent looked homeless! The meals are basically tv dinners. No one is ever at the front desk to assist you. Much less answer the phone when you call….nor do they call you back when they said they would! They sent my loved one out to the hospital numerous of times that wasn’t even necessary and the hospital said it was ridiculous and that they do that all the time! I can go on and on! Bottom line….LIARS!!!!!

Recommend for independent living
Most of staff are very nice and eager to help. If something is broken takes a while to get fixed. Overall nice place. I would recommend them only if your loved one is able to get around it themselves. My Dad is needing a little more care and it is rough. I spend a lot of nights there.

The Palms at O'Nei review
The place was clean. The staff was friendly. At times I had to make sure that my mother was getting her meds and properly. The meals were alright. Nothing spectacular. The residents wanted more soup and The Palms just didn't make what the residents asked for. After Covid they stopped Activities and didn't do much in the way of bringing anything back except for Bingo and a few other games. Initially the value for cost was good. Mom had a nice room and she didn't mind being there. We could afford it. Mom was there for a year and then they jumped the prices up and we could no longer afford to keep her there and had to move her to another less expensive facility. The owner said he would work with us but that was when we were walking out the door after we moved her. We would have preferred to keep her there. Overall it was a decent place for the money.

Beware of false information
Certain staff members were very helpful, others really didn't care. Multiple medications were stopped without my knowledge or a physicians order. The food was awful. I took him out to dinner at least 3 times a week. Activities were a joke. They had a Wii game. Very bad experience.

Suggestions for advocates when making living arrangements
It is a very good PERSONAL care home. Once a loved one starts to need more one on one services it is time to go to skilled nursing. My only negative comment would be: around September of last year my mother said she felt she needed more one on one care and I should start looking for a nursing home. I called and told the palms I was giving one months notice about moving my mother out. They asked why, I explained that her needs changed where she would need assistance getting to the bathroom and assistance with dressing herself. I was told they could provide that and there would not be a price increase for level of care needs. A couple of months into this new arrangement it was suggested I bring in a hospice/palliative care group to help. I did and after an incident which sent her to the hospital I was informed that she had to stay with a hospice palliative care group to be able to stay living there. I feel that they should have told me that the extra care was to be short term or explain what exactly their definition of extra care was. I am not faulting anyone at the palms. Everything was moving so quickly and decisions had to be made on a dime. I should have requested something in writing about what services they could and would supply. My advice to anyone, anywhere would be to get things in writing or tape conversations with people so you remember the little details. Don't feel pressured into making a decision on a loved ones care "right now".

Definitely a good value for the services that you get - the main staff are exceptional
[name removed] who is one the charge nurses is extremely helpful and communicative with our family on a regular basis. [name removed] who is a nursing assistance is always pleasant to speak with, up beat, and makes every single residents that she comes in contact with that they are the only one she is caring for. [name removed] which is another nursing assistant is the same way. [name removed] helps the residents get to and from the dining hall, helps them outside if they are in wheelchairs or to other places and he is just really nice and friendly. We have met some very nice communicative people working here. The reason we gave it an overall 4 out of 5 rating is the food - it not really that good it is a lot of carbs and starches. However they do have nice activities they are starting to bring back, they have a nice gazebo thing outside and our loved ones enjoys bingo.
