When she discovers a food that a resident likes(such as spareribs and grapes that are among my husband's favorites), she adds them more often to the menu. She also goes all-out with a buffet, cake and music, to celebrate birthdays. She also makes adjustments for individual needs. For instance, she bought another shower chair when the one she had was giving my husband pain. The biggest problem is getting my husband to do the exercise required to get him out of his wheelchair and hopefully walking with a walker. Because it takes two or three assistants, [name removed] has to find time in their schedule and then convince [name removed], who is very reluctant and afraid, to take on the endeavor daily as the therapist has prescribed. Also [name removed] has difficulty finding some of the sports and movies he wants to see on the TV in his room. On the positive side, the staff lets me join [name removed] for dinner on one of the patios, in his room or in the dining room after the other residents have gone to their rooms. And they allow me to bring our dog to visit, although she has to be in a patio or my husband's room because some of the other patients are allergic to dogs. My husband's room is large enough for us to watch tv together and to bring in an extra small table where I have put a stereo cd player and where we also plan to play Scrabble.\nThe residents seem very nice, but only one of them is able to carry on a conversation with my husband.\nI wish there was more emphasis on physical therapy and getting patients outdoors in the fresh air\n\nAnd perhaps the home could offer some opportunity for visiting musicians or other form of entertainment or learning. Perhaps someone could organize a discussion about an artist while showing his or her paintings.
