My father is 92, but the service is really for my mother. I called and started working with them almost immediately. Gentle Shepherd has been with us now for over 3 years. It is a matter of finding the right fit for my mom, finding people she’s comfortable with. Not every caregiver is for every person. Gentle Shepherd works with you to find the right person. Now the caregivers are like family. They come in from 5pm to 10pm 7 days a week. They help with medicine reminders, meal prep, laundry, getting her ready for bed, making sure they are set for the next day.

103 year old mom
Our mother is 103. We've relied on Gentle Shepherd Care for more than three years. We live out of state and visit often, but there are things we just can't do. They provide 24-hour care, all meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, monitoring her pacemaker, restorative therapy... and personal grooming and toileting.

More affordable than a memory ward and better quality care
My mom lived her happy last years in the home she loved. None of us kids are in state, but with Gentle Shepherd Care, we knew she was happy and loved. At night, the caregiver wouldn't just put Mom to bed, she gave Mom a kiss on the forehead as we watched through the cameras. Gentle Shepherd Care worked with us to plan and deliver the life my Mom wanted. She stayed in her own home, overlooking the lake, enjoying daily walks, reading and being read to aloud, sipping her one glass of wine each day at 4pm. As her Alzheimer's and dementia worsened, my mother needed more care. With Gentle Shepherd, we were able to gradually increase from part-time to 24-hour care over almost a 3 year period. Gentle Shepherd was more affordable, higher quality care. It would have cost $100k/year in a memory ward, and Mom wouldn't have had one-on-one care. Instead, we increased care over time and only reached $100k in the final year, and it was ALWAYS one-on-one care.

Gentle Shepherd's best gift was helping us prepare for each phase of my mother's dementia
My mother moved in with us about 9 years ago. I retired from my position to spend more time with her. We had a few months together before dementia took control. [name removed], the CEO of Gentle Shepherd Care, came and consulted with us. We started with a caregiver named [name removed], who was just amazing. At first, I just needed a relief day so my husband and I could get out. Then daily care to help with showers, dressing and appointments. I was sleeping with Mom, only not sleeping so that I could take her to the bathroom. It wasn't sustainable. Now we have night care too. [name removed] best gift for us was to prepare us for each phase of my mother's dementia, what to expect. She provides people who are responsible, caring and dependable, and you don't get that very much. [name removed] checks in every few months, meets with my mom and us, and works with us on integrative medicine and recommendations to help my mother. Gentle Shepherd has grown with our needs and prepared us for what is likely to happen next.

Given us peace of mind
Gentle Shepherd Care has provided live-in care to my mother 24/7 since January. She wanted to still keep herself in her own home and was not wanting a nursing home. They cook for her, do light cleaning, make sure that she is safe. It has given me and my two sisters peace of mind. They are very good at making sure your parents are safe and cared for.

A lifeline
The home health assistance is for my husband, my hero. After taking care of him as sole caregiver for many years, I knew I needed help or I wasn’t going make it. Managing his type of dementia is a complex, comprehensive full-time job, 24 hours a day 365 days a year. And, the complexity and comprehensiveness for care was increasing. Gentle Shepherd, for me, was a lifeline. They came in, evaluated the level of home care necessary, and then sent out home health aides who immediatley stepped in and took over. And, they exceeded my expectations by the following: - Helping me with his daily routine - Helping me with his medical needs Helping me with his mental, physical and emotional needs - Helping me with my needs Most of all, the GSC aides weren't in our home to just be present and accounted for, they were here as a considerate friend listening/hearing our needs, and a caring companion whose actions proved that they did.

Trusted them in my home and with my mother
With dementia patients, doctors look for certain signs. Are they clean? Safe? Do they have a routine? It was important that my mother was well cared for in our home. [name removed], who owns Gentle Shepherd Care, called me back within five minutes. She came out and gave an assessment to say how to help mom better: a grab bar in the shower, changing the toilet seat, changing the entrance to our home. Building trust with someone is really hard. You give them a code to your home. Gentle Shepherd sent a caregiver to us for four hours each day so that we could go to work. Leaving mom at home for the hour gap between when I had to leave for work and when we had care scheduled, I never had to worry. That speaks volumes. They were always on time. The caregiver would get mom up and ready. Shower her. Dress her. Take care of her laundry. Change sheets. Assist her to the bathroom. Brush her hair. She may not have gone anywhere, but my mom was a beautiful lady, and they kept her looking good.

Night care for my mother-in-law
My mother-in-law used to be in Independent Living, but after many falls her bones were fragile. She is always in pain. She needs to be carefully changed because of her bones and to make sure her skin doesn't break down. Gentle Shepherd Care was there at night to help her and us. I was getting her up at night to take her to the bathroom, but it was too much for me. I realized I was really tired from not getting any sleep. Now Gentle Shepherd has been with us for over a year. We loved the owner from the beginning. She was so gentle with us and so understanding. People started right away. She was very conscientious about us meeting with that person first, explaining to her what our needs are, what my mother-in-law's needs are, and really understanding the situation because she is so fragile. They do a lot of things while they're here like personal care, changing, rubbing cream on her shoulders, taking care of her cat, getting her books. They really care for her and make an effort.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Gentle Shepherd Care

A Place for Mom has scored Gentle Shepherd Care 9.8 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
