Sub-par
My mother was first at Sunnybrook, then Avita because of the advancement of dementia. What started out as (seemingly) caring about my mother morphed into escalating bills and being ignored. $12000 a month and she was falling 1-2x per week. Her room was dirty, her clothes lost, and by Christmas I was disgusted with the level of care... inexperienced "aides" whom I last saw screaming at a resident. She became sick and by the time she was unable to get out of her bed, an ambulance took her to first, a full ER, and then to Maine Medical where she had influenza, bacterial pneumonia, and a UTI. Dead in a week. She only spent one night in a hospice where I watched her die. When cleaning her room, I told one of the top nursing people that she was going to hospice and her comment was: "It's for the best." A few months back I was in tears and spoke with some Director in her neighborhood whose comment was: "We are a FOR PROFIT organization, you know." Huh? I wished we had NEVER taken her there.

While looking into options for my loved one, we felt like this location was the best fit from the rest that we have seen. The staff is great; they check on my loved one frequently, they understand his needs, the amuse him, and he’s secured. They have all sorts of activities that they provide such as: greeting card creation, exercise classes, book club, evening movies, classic TV shows, bingo, crafts, morning stretch, jewelry making, popcorn and trivia, happy hour with cocoa and ice cream, history of holiday symbols, making ornaments, they bake together, and they also have religious services. Also their food menu changes daily and my loved one is happy with it. The food is good, plentiful, and fresh.

Outstanding Care for mom
This is a nice community for good care. The menu is appealing and a lot really the good fine food that we have had her. We like the staff is caring and the community has a good feeling. The staff really care and know each person by name. This has a good home environment for the residents. We would highly recommend this community for the great care to others

My first visit --- loved it. [Removed] was patient and answered all my questions plus some I had not even thought of! The facility is new and so well thought out. All the staff I saw seemed dedicated and kind. I am recommending my sisters to visit sooner rather than later. I hope to add more comments later.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Memory Care. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Know Maine’s regulations for memory care. Each state has its own laws and inspection processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the communities you’re considering. Learn more about Maine’s regulations for memory care and download the Guide to Senior Living Licensure and Inspection Reports.

  • Tour the location. Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and it helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services. Before committing, make sure that the community offers all the services your loved one needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.
