Wonderful Experience
When it came time to think about placing my mother-in-law in a retirement community we thought long and hard about it. She has sight issues and lived in her home by herself all her life and was not used to being told when she had to do something. She is also a very private person and would not want everyone knowing what she was doing. When we talked to Ecumenical we felt so at ease know that she would get the care she needed in such a well run establishment. She was assigned an "ambassador" the day she arrived and Elaine took her under her wing and made sure she knew where everything was and how everything ran. She made sure she was at meals and encouraged her to participate in activities. They would go for walks around the campus and spend a lot of time sitting in the gazebo with a couple other ladies who all made her feel welcome. She now has a "new family" and we don't have to worry about her being alone in her home.

What a positive experience, and we so grateful you shared. Our Resident Ambassador program is to assist residents with their transition and help them feel welcomed and at home. Facility Selection & Move In
[name removed] and [name removed] were a Godsend during our time of need. We had a short timeline to find the right community for our Father who has late stage dementia. They guided us through the process and were extremely accommodating and kind to us. Ecumenical felt more homelike to us and more joyful than the other options we toured. I would highly recommend a visit if you are looking for care for your family member.

Staff Is Awesome!
When we began our search for a retirement community for our father, the experience was daunting. From the first interaction with the staff at Ecumenical, we were immediately put at ease. [name removed] helped us through the process from beginning to end. Our mountain of questions and uncertainties were quickly answered as we navigated the on-boarding process. We went from feeling overwhelmed to empowered. The staff are friendly, helpful, and dedicated to ensuring the well-being and dignity of every resident at Ecumenical. On our initial tour, it was evident that the residents were happy and well taken care of. This positive, first impression has been regularly validated on our many visits to the facility. Finding Ecumenical was an answer to our prayers.

Mom's New Home
My mom needed a new living arrangement that better supported her needs. I contacted Ecumenical and received a response within 24 hours. We were able to set-up a tour of the facility and set-up a move-in date in a timely manner. All of the staff have been incredibly helpful and friendly. This is the happiest that I have seen my mom in a long time.

Excellent Care
My mother was in the Memory Care unit at Ecumenical Retirement Community for several years. Our entire family has nothing but excellent things to say about the facility and the employees. My mother was well cared for - I'd even go so far to say loved - by all of the employees that cared for her on a daily basis. It was such a relief to know that she was somewhere safe and being cared for by professionals that truly had her best interests at heart. As her illness progressed, so did her level of care. The staff was caring, attentive, cheerful and knowledgeable. If you are looking for a retirement community for yourself or a loved one I HIGHLY suggest Ecumenical Retirement Community.

Great people, nice location
Visited when looking to move mom from home and the salesperson was very helpful and nice. Met many workers and they were very friendly. The location is near so much but private from traffic and noise and feels like a park. Really liked the outdoor spaces. This place had nice rooms and lots to do.

Disgusted
My dad is there and the assisted care he gets is good. However I am constantly hearing his complaints about the lack of staff. If this place is so great why can't they keep anyone? its like a revolving door. He tells me all the time that this persons leaving and that person is leaving. The worst is the dining room. The food is so over cooked its either like mush and the meat is so over cooked and tough he can't chew it.. He sits at the second lunch and they are always running out of food and or condiments. The worst thing is today when I went in he told me they did away with the silverware and china and everything is plastic and Styrofoam! I witnessed the dining room when I was leaving. How the heck is my 90 year old dad supposed to hold and drink a hot cup of coffee with his arthritic hands ? How is he supposed to cut his meat ? How are any of the residents supposed to eat and drink on Styrofoam ? He summed it up perfectly today. "They treat is like they don't care, but they will surely raise the rent" This is a disgrace.

Response from Ecumenical Retirement Community
August 7, 2019
Response first posted Feb. 19, 2019: We truly appreciate your bringing these concerns to our attention as we always want to exceed expectations in caring for our amazing residents. As you know, our executive director reached out to you directly back in February. This response will again address your concerns. Paper products. The switch to paper products in dining was temporary as part of our protocol to limit the spread of an illness. As you may have noticed, there was a sign on the door advising visitors that Ecumenical had several cases of gastrointestinal illness on campus. During times of illness we use paper products so they can be discarded. This helps us reduce the spread of germs involved in collecting dishes and moving them around to wash and disinfect. Also, by discarding paper products, co-workers have additional time to repeatedly disinfect every single item in the dining room to eliminate germs. And they spend hours doing so. We all want to feel well! Food quality. Our dining director holds regular dining meetings and has not received complaints about food quality. That said, there is always room for improvement and she welcomes feedback. Please consider attending her next dining meeting and encourage your father to speak up. If he truly doesn’t like what is being served, he can request an alternative meal. Meal times are an enjoyable time for most of us and we want your father to look forward to dining. Staffing. Actually, Ecumenical Retirement Community staffs above the ratio the state requires. We do so to ensure our residents get the care and attention they need, as well as time to build friendships with co-workers. You may notice new faces as our PCAs often rotate in different buildings to fill in for each other when co-workers need to be off for vacations, illnesses, etc. Also, the senior living industry as a whole has a very high turnover rate. While we try our best to support co-workers and offer numerous opportunities for advancement and to earn higher pay, the reality is that many simply choose to work in another field. Please see our executive director if you have further questions. Thank you.

Not as it seems
The memory care unit at first seems like a really nice place. But over time when visiting you will notice that things are not as they seem . The nurses seem to mock the residents and are never around when needed and always seem to be more concern about what's happening in each other's life then what they are being paid to do. If we had know this in advance we would have thought twice before moving our loved one here.

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the Pennsylvania regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about Pennsylvania regulations for Assisted Living.

Frequently Asked Questions
about Ecumenical Retirement Community

A Place for Mom has scored Ecumenical Retirement Community 10 out of 10 using our proprietary review score.

We assign review scores to give a more reliable view into senior living communities and home care agencies. Our review scores prioritize reviews that are recent — the past 24 months — because we know families need current information when choosing senior care.

Those with many recent, positive reviews receive a high review score, while providers with few recent reviews — regardless of how positive — receive a lower review score. Communities with no recent reviews will not have a review score, even if older reviews are positive. The maximum A Place for Mom review score a community can receive is 10 points.
