My mom and I feel like part of the family at this community. The staff care a great deal for the residents. This is a small community that does not have a lot of bells and whistles. They take good care of this community and it is very clean. They have music people come in and entertain. I

My tour review
The first community caught my attention so fast that it was hard to give another community any consideration. I just had to go with the community that gave me that feeling. However, the tour was still good and with good people that were good to me also.

You're not a half-way house!
Burke Long Term Care in Morganton, NC runs this facility like a half-way house. My brother has lived in a group home for 20 years... He moved here a few months ago and now is being booted out the door to live on his own. As previously determined by the State Of North Carolina, he is not emotionally or mentally capable of living on his own. He is not intellectually able to manage money on any scale and does not have the impulse control to not spend every dime he has as soon as it touches his palm. Without medication, my brother is not capable of managing his emotions including rage. I've tried to have him visit and manage his own meds and he couldn't even make it a week. My parents have tried to allow him to cook at their home and he couldn't complete a simple meal. A few years ago, he had a stroke shortly after being panicked by a inconsiderate neighbor setting off fireworks. My brother was frozen in fear as fireworks went off near him. I had to physically move him inside away from the noise and put noise cancelling headphones on him. When my brother visits, I don't allow him to be by himself because he cannot handle any disturbances or minor accidents. I'm enraged a facility can so easily force people out onto the street who are incapable of living on their own. That was the primary reason he was placed in a group home 20 years ago!

Tips for evaluating your community options

Safety is a primary concern when seniors and their families look for Assisted Living. To ensure that a community meets your needs and expectations, we recommend that seniors and family members:

  • Tour the location: Touring allows you to speak to current residents and staff, and helps you confirm the accuracy of the community description and photos. Use our touring checklist to help guide your visit.

  • Confirm the availability of required services: Before you commit, make sure that the community offers all the services your senior needs, and that those services can be provided within your budget.

  • Know the North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living: Each state has its own laws and inspections processes to ensure seniors reside in a safe environment. Depending on your state, you may even be able to look up inspection reports for the community(ies) you’re considering. Learn more about North Carolina regulations for Assisted Living.
